Arming School Teachers is the Only Way to Protect Our Children

With the latest school shooting in Florida, everyone is pushing for more gun control and the thought of arming teachers seems like the last thing on everyone’s mind.  We have heard this phrase time and time again, “we don’t have a gun problem, we have a people problem.”  The narrative at this point is more about gun control and not about protecting our children.  I’ve read an article in the Western Journal about how Israel has only had two successful school shootings since 1974.

In 1974, Palestinian terrorists took over the Netiv Meir Elementary School in what has been called the “Ma’alot Massacre,” which left 22 children dead and many others injured.  The attack forced Israel to come up with a solution in order to prevent such a situation from ever happening again.

The nation requires its schools to have a security system, and that policy is still going strong after 40 years.  The results are clearly evident, as there have only been two successful attacks at Israeli schools since 1974, according to Dr. Ted Noel, writing in American Thinker. Noel wrote that “in both cases, the bad guys were killed by armed teachers.”

Why doesn’t every school in America have a standard security procedure in place for schools across the nation?  This is something I think should fall upon the Federal Government.  Every school should be locked down especially during school hours and people should have to be let in any door from an administration personnel that physically pushes a button to let them in.   No one should just be able to walk into a school unless they have a security badge.  Every school should have security cameras in place at exits and dedicated personnel watching them.

To take it a step further, Israel also prepares its students and teachers for the slight chance a gunman does get through security by teaching them to be proactive in times of terror by barricading a door or sensing the ripe opportunity to get away safely.

As soon as there are shots fired on school grounds, each classroom should go on lockdown and barricade the doors.  Each classroom should be outfitted with a switch that sets off an alarm if there are shots fired and also triggers all doors to automatically lock.  This should be common practice for every school, at no point in time should any child or teacher leave the room.  If it so happens that the teacher is armed and the shooter happens to get past a barricade, take the shooter out!  Teachers should not be forced to carry guns but if a teacher wants to volunteer to conceal carry and go through the proper background checks and training, by all means, get that teacher a gun!  Trump came out today and talked about giving bonuses to teachers who carry and I cannot agree more with him.

“These people are cowards. They’re not going to walk into a school if 20% of the teachers have guns — it may be 10% or may be 40%. And what I’d recommend doing is the people that do carry, we give them a bonus. We give them a little bit of a bonus,” Trump said. “They’ll frankly feel more comfortable having the gun anyway. But you give them a little bit of a bonus.”

It is time to arm the teachers in our schools.  America needs to take a page from Israel on protecting our schools and have volunteer teachers packing heat.  “Only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”  That is the truest story you will ever hear in your life!
